First-time Umrah from India

Ninety days from decision to departure, week by week, what to book in which order, and why the order matters more than the list.

Start 90 days out. The two hard deadlines are a passport renewal at 3-5 weeks and the meningitis ACWY certificate at 10 days minimum before travel. Start the visa before paying any hotel balance, because roughly one application in twelve is rejected on a document formatting error.

The order that matters

Most first-time plans fail on sequencing, not on effort. Two things gate everything else: your passport, and the vaccination. Everything else can be compressed into a fortnight if it has to be.

The second sequencing error is paying for hotels before the visa is approved. Haram-adjacent hotel bookings are frequently non-refundable, and a rejected visa leaves you holding them. Reputable operators hold a room against a deposit while the visa processes, ask for that explicitly.

What a first trip actually costs

Budget ₹1,15,000 per person for a comfortable first trip: 10 nights, a 4-star hotel 400-800 m from the Haram, triple sharing, full-service airline. You can do it for ₹78,000 in a 3-star at 1.4 km, and the difference is the walk.

For a first Umrah specifically, the walking distance is worth paying for. You will not know the routes, the gates or the crowd rhythms, and everything takes longer than it will on a second trip.

What nobody tells first-timers

Do not sleep on arrival. Land, drop bags, and perform Umrah. The fatigue is real but sleeping first turns a four-hour rite into a lost day.

Scented soap breaks ihram. This is the single most common accidental breach. Buy unscented toiletries in India; the ones sold around the Haram are not always genuinely unscented.

Seven lengths of sa'i, not seven round trips. Safa to Marwah is one. If you finish at Safa, you have miscounted.

Book the Rawdah permit the day your dates confirm. It is free, on Nusuk, one per person per 30 days, and slots fill within hours.

A realistic ten-night itinerary

Day 1: land, transfer, perform Umrah. Day 2: Fajr in the Haram, then sleep, everyone underestimates the first-night fatigue. Days 3-6: voluntary tawaf, Makkah ziyarat after Fajr, rest in the afternoon heat. Day 7: Haramain rail to Madinah. Days 8-10: Rawdah slot, Quba, Uhud, the date markets. Day 11: depart.

Common questions

How do I prepare for my first Umrah?

Start 90 days before travel. Check passport validity first, it must be valid six months beyond arrival and renewal takes 3 to 5 weeks. Then get the meningitis ACWY vaccination, which must be at least 10 days before travel. Apply for the visa on Nusuk before paying any hotel balance, then book the Rawdah permit as soon as your Madinah dates are confirmed.

How much should a first Umrah cost from India?

Budget 1,15,000 rupees per person for a comfortable first trip: 10 nights, a 4-star hotel 400 to 800 metres from the Haram, triple sharing, on a full-service airline. It can be done for 78,000 rupees in a 3-star at 1.4 kilometres, but on a first trip the shorter walk is generally worth the difference.

What is the biggest mistake first-time Umrah travellers make?

Applying scented soap or deodorant after entering ihram. It is the most common accidental breach and it is entirely avoidable, buy unscented toiletries before travelling. The second most common is sleeping on arrival instead of performing Umrah, which turns a four-hour rite into a lost day.

How many days do I need for my first Umrah?

Ten nights is the comfortable minimum for a first trip: six or seven nights in Makkah and three or four in Madinah. Seven nights is workable but cuts Madinah to a single night, which is not enough for the Rawdah permit plus ziyarat. Fifteen nights suits travellers who want an unhurried pace.
